Urban Narratives: Editorial Writing

Bean's NYC Guide

Bean’s NYC Guide is more than a magazine—it’s a storytelling experience, offering an intimate exploration of New York City through a meticulously crafted narrative lens. The writing takes center stage, employing a distinct free indirect discourse style to draw readers into a shared consciousness with the author. This technique brings the city’s vibrant scenes to life with a voice that feels personal yet universally relatable, reflecting the rhythms and contradictions of NYC life.

From evocative personal anecdotes in The Life of Bean to vivid, descriptive reviews in Belly Memory and Just for Fun, each section is designed to captivate, inform, and resonate with a young, urban audience. The Words of Wisdom section enhances this narrative by incorporating insights from fellow NYU students, blending diverse perspectives into a cohesive dialogue about life in the city.

Beyond its compelling prose, the project showcases a seamless integration of writing with visual storytelling. The layout and design serve as a canvas to highlight the text, with complementary photographs—also captured and edited by the author—adding layers to the narrative.

By focusing on narrative flow, audience engagement, and a unique stylistic approach, Bean’s NYC Guide demonstrates a refined ability to balance journalistic detail with creative storytelling, making it a standout piece for anyone who appreciates the art of writing and the magic of New York.
